Ayame pushed her bangs out of her face as she finished setting up the sound system in the room. Today she'd be auditioning the members of the dance team for vice captain. She had assured her students that she was only auditioning second years as she felt the newer first years didn't have enough experience. Ayame already had her eyes on someone, but she felt she needed to be fair about this. She turned on the large overhead television that hung on the wall and made sure the video was in place.
Ayame had felt bad for her students when she had been asked to be the team's coach. She knew nothing about dancing and could barely walk without fumbling over herself. Thankfully, she had asked an old college buddy for help. The students would give her the songs they wanted to dance to and her college friend would work out the choreography. It helped to have those recorded videos, too, as Ayame could make copies for her students to take home.
As some of the first years trickled into the room, Ayame promised they'd be practicing after the auditions were over. For now, they could sit and watch their senpai and try to learn. She motioned to the far wall for them to sit. Ayame looked toward the door, waiting for her third and second years.

Spencer'd been preparing for this day practically since he started dancing. Okay, so maybe he didn't have training like the other kids here. He didn't have the twelve years of ballet backed up with several years of tap, jazz, and ballroom some people did. All he had was himself, Youtube, and practically an obsessive need to dance.
And, right now, he was such a bundle of nerves he really thought he was going to pull a Nanami Satou and throw up in front of everyone. He doubted he'd garner the sympathy she had. This was weird. He didn't get nervous. He had felt the inklings of nerves sometimes - when he first arrived in Japan, he'd been a little bit nervous, but not that nervous. It was a new adventure, after all. Japan was fucking awesome.
This, though? He'd worked so hard. He'd spent hours with everyone inside and outside practices, helping them learn the dances or giving them tips on not injuring themselves or just being their friend. Originally, he hadn't come at it with an intent to get any kind of position. Dancing was just cool.
But lately, he'd heard so many people saying how good - no, perfect - he'd be for the position. He was finally starting to believe them, that he was really, truly great at something. He wanted this more than he wanted pretty much anything else in the world right now.
Spencer shook out his trembling hands, bouncing up and down on his heels. He blew out a deep breath, clenching and unclenching his fists, and focused on what he had to do. He knew he could do this. He was a baller, after all.

Ageha trailed into the practice room, meeting Ayame's gaze for just an instant. Souta should have been coming along with her -- he was at her side just a minute ago -- but she didn't know where he'd run off to. She really wished he hadn't, though; she needed someone to snark with throughout this whole thing. She couldn't do it with Ayame, for obvious reasons. Their leanings toward who the position would go to were totally different.
In Ageha's opinion, she should have had the most say in all of this; she was the captain, she had actual training and could recognize skill when she saw it, and she wanted someone who was both talented and could work with her (preferably without being too annoying). That was what it was like between her and her old senpai. She wasn't vice-captain last year, but she'd worked so hard the past two years, her senpai guiding her thoroughly, that she ended up being chosen over the actual vice-captain at the end of last year.
She'd gotten all mushy and sort of cried when it happened. A lot.
She knew quite a few people were auditioning. She'd seen Spencer in the hall as she made her way here and, while it took her a moment to swallow down the urge to toss an insult his way, she wished him good luck. He seemed weirdly... nervous. It was like watching a cat swim -- something that seemed almost impossible in real life, but there it was, right in front of your eyes.
After setting her overstuffed bag onto the floor, Ageha took her seat in the front row. She'd be watching with Ayame and helping judge the auditioners, anyway; she deserved a good seat.

Souta was nervous. Incredibly nervous. His hands were shaking and eventually he'd taken to just stuffing them in his hoodie pockets so nobody would notice. He'd almost decided not to come. He was so nervous and shaky he was almost convinced he'd blow the whole audition but Ageha turned up at the door of the classroom and practically escorted him to the auditions room. That's right... He hadn't told Ageha he was auditioning, he wanted it to be a surprise!
He couldn't really explain quite how much he wanted this. He'd been in the Ouran dance team for middle school. He'd been the vice captain in his second year. Unfortunately he hadn't been the middle school captain due to studying abroad but all that experience had to count for something... Right?
Not to mention how much experience he had. He'd been training for this for so long. He'd trained in ballroom dancing, tap dancing, hip hop, he'd even taken a year of salsa dancing when someone dared him too and he'd loved it. Dancing was his life.
Ever since first year he'd never been late to a single dance rehearsal, he'd pitched ideas and tried his best to support his other members in the club. When someone was panicking he was always the one to cheer them up, even if he couldn't always help them with their problem. Ageha had even told him he was 'kind of good'. True praise indeed. He was definitely ready. Ageha had been coaching him since he entered the high school and... she was captain now... so it only made sense that he should follow after her and become vice captain!
When Ageha walked right into the classroom Souta was about to follow her before he caught sight of Spencer. Changing his course immediately he walked in front of him and clapped his shoulders, grinning brightly. If Souta didn't get vice captain, he'd want it to go to Spencer.
"Good Luck!" He tried to remember that meme it was that Spencer loved... It was a restaurant or something... "Let's go out for some cheeky dumplings after this alright?" Had he got it kind of right? He hoped he had. He tried.

Kage could feel her head pounding. She had initially joined the dance team because she felt it out help her with her dancing in drama. She wasn't amazing, having only been taught by her mother, who had been an exceptional dancer....but her lessons had ended when she was nine. Still, when she had joined the club she had instantly come to admire the way Ageha danced. Kage wanted to be that good. She wanted to learn to be that good. But Ageha didn't seem to care. Kage constantly felt alienated by the captain. Washio-sensei had tracked her down after the last practice and told her that she was expected to try out. Kage didn't know why. When asked, Washio-sensei only praised Kage's talent and her adaptability. Kage didn't know what the woman was talking about. There we so many people in the club who were better than her. She hadn't even planned on coming today. She had wanted to skip the auditions entirely, but Washio-sensei being her homeroom teacher, she couldn't just fake being ....even if she felt like she could vomit at any moment. She quietly stepped into the room and took to stretching, surveying who was here. Spencer and Souta. Nope. She didn't stand a chance against these two. WHY had Washio-sensei insisted she try out? Kage was nowhere near as good as these two. She could memorize the dances fairly quickly, but her excecution was always lacking. She didn't want to be here. She managed to flash Spencer and Souta a nervous smile and quietly wished them both good luck.

Nanami could feel the tension in the air as she crept into the room, scanning it for any signs of Ageha. She knew she was here already - Ah! There she was. Good. She skittered her way over, plunking down next to her, and sent her a questioning look.
She'd seen most of the people who were trying out. She'd actually talked to Spencer already, huddled in the hall surrounded by some of his friends. He'd crept in behind her, still looking like he was about to have a heart attack. Souta didn't look much better off. Nanami's eyes dropped on Kage.
Well, she looked nervous too. Nanami hoped the people who didn't get picked took it well - she hadn't been picked as captain, either, and it hurt a lot but Ageha was her best friend. She couldn't be mad at her, it had been a fair decision, since Ageha was just a better dancer!
She turned her phone off. She didn't want to distract any of the dancers. All the ones she knew of that Ageha had mentioned as potentials she liked were here.
Oh, she just wanted them all to do well...

Ayame waited until the steady stream of students dwindled down to just the lazy stragglers. She looked around the room for a moment and then spotted....Ageha! Good. She was right where Ayame wanted her to be. She waved enthusiastically to Ageha. Ayame was very impressed with Ageha last year and how strong a captain the girl had become. She waited until everyone had finished stretching before clapping her hands to get everyone's attention.
"Alright, everyone, pay attention please! Can I have the second-years who are auditioning up front?" She waited for everyone to shift positions. Ayame counted out the number of students standing in front of her. She had expected Souta and Spencer to try out. Ah, good, Kage was here, too. Hmm...no Shiro. She must be busy with Archery. Once everyone was ready, Ayame spoke up again.
"I know last year, you all auditioned with your own routines....but I want to do something different this year. Not only do I think our new vice-captain should be talented...but I want them to be able to learn quickly. I want them to be able to cover not just the styles they're strongest in, but the styles they're not, so that they can help other students. I want to see how fast you all can learn."
She picked up the remote to the television behind her. "So. I have a routine here that I'm going to let you all watch twice and then practice with once. Once you've gone through the dance all three times, I'll expect you to perform it in front of me right here. Right now. I'll pick out the top three and they'll do it again...and then I'll choose the vice-captain from there." She looked around. "Alright, the dance won't take up too much room, but I want you to spread out at least arm's length from each other. There we go. Good? Now let's practice."
She pressed play and the video began. Overall, the routine was just difficult enough to weed out the ones who needed the most practice, but not so difficult enough that it would be impossible to learn after just three run-throughs. It was also short enough that there would still be some time to practice before the end of club time.
Ayame paced in front of the group, watching them learn the routine. She saw the determined, and nervous, faces of the second-years. Over all, it would be nearly half an hour before they'd be done with the video.
"Alright, this time you don't get a video." She lifted the remote and turned off the television. "Aaaand....cue music!" She pressed play and the music started up.

Spencer's nerves peaked right before the video started. As soon as he started learning the choreography, however, he felt so much... better. His stomach had stopped doing horrible flips, he didn't feel quite so nauseous anymore... he just felt okay now. Happy, even. The dance was really cool, actually, and he liked it, and it wasn't that hard. He had it down by the second runthrough.
Yeah, he had this. He felt it. He knew the dance, so even when the music started without the video, he had it down. The only real thing he screwed up was a particularly nasty bit of choreography - his foot slipped, he almost tripped and that would have been so bad, but he managed to right himself quickly.
There was no way anyone was in competition with him except for Souta, right? They absolutely had this.

After watching the video through Souta could feel himself feel slightly better... only slightly. By the second run through he was pretty sure he'd got it. It was kind of fun actually, he always did like learning new dances and this one wasn't so bad! It was alright.
When the music started without the video he started to dance again, overall confident he had the dance down! The occasional looks he managed to get to the others it seemed they were doing really well too. The frown that had been permanently lodged on his face for an hour slowly started to ease of his face and by the middle of the run through with just the music he was pretty sure he was smiling for Japan. This was what he loved, this was what got him through middle school, this was what he was good at!
By the end of the dance and at the final move he breathed hard and when the music stopped he looked up, face shining. He put his hands over his face, running them back into his hair, making his hair stick up in odd angles. He beamed brightly, grinning right at Ageha before looking away and breathing out, pulling the zipper down on his hoodie and fanning his face.

Kage's eyes scanned the video, no smile on her face. Just seriousness and determination. By the second run through, she was already trying to move with it. By the third run-through she had only missed a few steps. It was pretty easy, though her moves were sloppy and not as refined as the others.
When the time to really show what she could do came, the seriousness faded into a faint smile. A true smile. Dancing and singing were about the only times she really TRUELY smiled...well, and when she was with her brothers or Crystal. Memory kicked in and Kage found herself moving through the routine. While all the steps were right, they weren't refined or deliberate as the others'. She had made sure everything was right, rather than pretty.
When the music ended, Kage had found that she HAD indeed remembered every step. She hadn't missed one. She was a little proud of herself, despite her failure to show any style or finesse with the dance. Still, she hoped to at least be praised for the fact it didn't take her very long to memorize the steps.

Ageha kept her eyes on the stage. They widened as she caught sight of Souta among the auditioners, her hackles raising because that little sneak never even told her he was auditioning, but she soon recovered. He was good. He'd improved a lot more than she gave him credit for.
When he smiled to her, she managed to return it. It spread, small but noticeable, across her face.
It looked like the candidates she leaned toward were doing as well as she'd hoped, regardless of mistakes. Mistakes were normal, especially in this situation. Ayame's process was weird. Ageha didn't get it, even after Ayame explained it. Having talent, being able to learn fast, and being well-rounded were good, but so were personality and experience. Dedication. If you were dedicated and worked hard, the things Ayame looked for would fall into place, wouldn't they? She didn't care so much about how fast they learned as much as she cared about wanting someone who could help her bolster this team. Her vice-captain needed to be a strong performer. Someone with enough skill to help show everyone the ropes and keep up with her, and decent ideas on how to help the team reach new heights. She wanted to get to nationals this year, after all. They'd gotten close last year, but hadn't made it. The team would need to be a lot stronger to do that.
As much as she hated to admit it, Spencer was really good. He didn't have a lot of training, but he worked hard; she'd caught him a few times while hanging out with Ryan. His style was surprisingly fluid, and he was a good learner, even if he was annoyingly mouthy. He was popular with everyone else, too, which would help unify the team.
She'd worked with Souta the longest. He was... punchy, she had to give him that, and he was one of the few people she knew who'd trained formally harder than she had. They collaborated well together, both here and in the Idols Club. She trusted him to do well. He was a lot better at dealing with people -- all brightness and smiles -- so he could help her teach the others.
Kage was... okay. She tried hard, and she was starting to improve. Her skills were there, but still unrefined, though she had potential. Ageha asked her once about her experience and learned Kage hadn't danced since she was nine. That explained a lot about the roughness of her movements. Her personality was sort of closed-off and abrasive, too. Her strengths matched what Ayame was looking for more than what she wanted.
She glanced over at Nanami with a vague sense of satisfaction, then turned to study Ayame, gauge her reaction.

Ayame watched the students, a smile on her face as she judged the way they danced. When speaking with her old classmate, they had gone over what to look for, but Ayame had also spoken other concerns. In the end, Ayame was certain of the three she wanted to see go again.
Spencer was skilled beyond belief. He'd make a strong teacher, that was for sure. If he didn't make vice-president, Ayame might have another job for him that could help her. Her old classmate was great for choreography help but Ayame believed that maybe someone closer to home might make it easier for the students to connect and learn the dances
Souta was good, too. He retained the moves fairly well and even showed some flair in his dancing. He also seemed genuinely thoughtful about his moves and how to execute them. Perhaps Ayame could team him up with Spencer for some extra routines.
And finally Kage. Ayame had to admit she was a little biased. Kage showed the most room for improvement, even in the few months of being here. Her moves were rough, but she showed that she could remember them.
Ayame walked over to Ageha to get the captain's opinion. She certainly did have much to say and it confirmed what Ayame was thinking.
"Spencer. Souta. Kage. You three will be dancing again. The rest of you, please join your teammates sitting down."

Spencer let out a sigh of relief, running his hands through his hair. It made it stick pretty much straight up, its default state. He took his glasses off, rubbing his eyes vigorously. He felt so much better after hearing Ayame.
He was one of the finalists. Good. He caught Souta's eye and sent him an encouraging thumbs-up and a nod, slipping his glasses back on. He was so ready. He was born ready! It was either him or Souta now - Kage wasn't even on his radar. He hadn't been able to see her, since he'd been next to Souta and someone else. Nevertheless, he turned to her and smiled.
"Hey, good luck, yeah?" He nodded.

After hearing Ayame his stomach flipped and he felt simultaneously better and worse. As other people passed him he received claps on the shoulder and someone ruffled his hair as they passed. He just grinned, trying to smooth his hair down slightly and failing.
And then there were three. He was ready. Nervous but ready! When he caught Spencer's eye he sent the thumbs up back, still grinning and when he heard Spencer address Kage he directed the thumbs up towards her as well. He'd managed to get a glimpse of her dancing. Her moves were accurate but not as fluid as his or Spencer's.
But now it was all to play for!

Wait, what? Had she heard her name? No. That couldn't be....yep. Surprised and unsure she was still awake, she stayed where she'd been standing. How? Why? She was nowhere near as good as the two standing next to her. She chanced a look at Ageha. She was pretty sure the team captain wouldn't be pleased. They didn't get along. At all. Not that Kage didn't try, to be honest. It just seemed like Ageha wouldn't have it.
Still, Spencer and Souta both seemed to be trying to wish her good luck and she flashed a nervous smile to both of them. "Th-thanks. You, too." No. Be better than that. A vice-president would be more encouraging than that! "You guys are awesome dancers. You'll be great."
She wasn't so sure about herself, though.
