There really was no such thing as catching a break, was there? Elene hadn't even finished her first week at school, and here she was missing class. Because of cramps. She didn't get them often, but when she did they were crippling. They came on in the middle of PE and Elene had stumbled to the nurse's office, bracing herself on the walls. Some of the wannabe-gallant male students had offered to help her, but Elene was determined to find her own way. She didn't need them, anyway. Boys who tried to be knights in shining armor were all the same.
She found the nurse's office abandoned, however. Of course. All she needed was to lay down and rest, though, so she made her way to one of the little cots and laid down, drawing in a long, deep breath. It didn't really make her feel better, honestly. But until the nurses showed up, just laying down was going to have to be enough. She wasn't bold enough to go looking for the heating pads or painkillers.
She thought she heard the door swing open and she turned her head. "Hello? Is anyone there?"

Today was a bad heart day.
Airi had felt it when she'd woken up this morning - the uncomfortable pressure in her chest, and a lightheaded feeling that wasn't the result of being sleepy. She'd toughed through it, but by her second period, the pressure on her chest had evolved into outright chest pain, and she was starting to feel a little dizzy. She was still well enough to make it to the Nurse's Office on her own - not that her teacher had been happy - but it was a welcome sight when she'd finally arrived.
She opened the door and stepped in, only to hear someone respond. "Yes!" Airi looked around, noting that there weren't any nurses. At least Ryan wasn't here? She knew she didn't have it nearly as bad as they did - it was good to know they were feeling better than she was right now. "Not a nurse, unfortunately - though I do know where everything is, if you need anything."
The nurses kept her emergency medication in the locked cabinet, but they'd been gracious enough to give her the combination for the lock - Airi was pretty glad about that right about now. She just needed to make her way over and get it unlocked.

Elene moved to sit up. A nurse would have been better, surely, but if this small girl knew where everything was and was willing to get it for her, all the better. "A heating pad, if you don't mind. And Excederin or naproxen if they have some, otherwise ibuprofen will be fine. Thank you." She couldn't bow, not like this, but she dipped her head in an attempt to show thanks.
Who was this girl that she would have access to the medicine cabinet? She didn't seem like a delinquent and the nurses didn't seem like they'd let just anyone have access. Was she someone important's daughter, maybe? A burst of pain made her squeeze her legs together. Ugh. "So." It'd be impolite to ask the other girl why she was here and asking how she managed to get access to the medicine cabinet was just plain nosy. "What class are you in?" That topic of conversation was safe enough.

Airi nodded. "Ah, of course!" she said, getting the medicine cabinet unlocked. Her own medication was on the top shelf, though the pain killers were down below. Uncapping them both, Airi seized two pills for Elene and placed them on a tray, before locking the cabinet back up and going towards another cabinet, the one with the heating pads. With that done, she opened the mini fridge to grab water - she'd never been able to swallow her pills dry, and it seemed rude to assume the other girl could. Airi paused for a moment to take her own medicine, grimacing at the taste. Ugh, she hated it. It tasted so bitter, even though she'd been taking them for years.
"Oh, class? Um, 2-C!" she'd been in 2-A last year before her relapse, but that didn't seem pressing to mention at the moment. "Here you go, miss." she placed the medicine, the heating pad and a fresh water bottle at the table by Elene's cot, flinching briefly as another wave of dizziness struck her. Airi moved to sit at the next cot, closing her eyes for a moment to will the dizziness away.
Ugh. It wasn't quite working. She sighed, raking a pale hand through her black hair, and hoped her medication would kick in soon enough. She hadn't realized the sleeve of her uniform pulled away in the movement, revealing the medical bracelet she wore underneath - and though most of it was hard to read, the mention of a heart condition was pretty obvious.

Was everyone at this school so friendly? Elene hadn't met many people yet, but so far quite of a few of the students and staff had been ridiculously friendly and helpful. Were they being nice because that's how they were, or were they being nice because Elene Saijo the child star had come back home to Ouran?
This girl seemed genuine, at least. She'd even thought to get water, even though Elene was perfectly capable of taking her pills dry. That was thoughtful. Elene took the heating pad first, laid it across her lap, and turned it on. Ah. She felt better already. She took the painkiller next and prayed it would kick in before the end of the day. "Thank you," she said again. She offered a shy smile.
Elene had meant to ask the girl about 2-C. What her homeroom teacher was like, how she liked her classmates, but when her eyes fell on the bracelet--she hadn't meant to read it, truly she hadn't. "Heart condition?" she said out loud, without even thinking about it.

The silence was a good thing - it gave Airi a moment to try and recollect herself. She rested her hands in her lap, absently placing two fingers at her wrist. Her doctors had drilled it into her so much that it was second nature - count her heart beats, and the beats per minute would tell her how well she was doing. Her rate still seemed a little high, but -
"Heart condition?"
Airi jumped, and the slight fluttering in her neck reminded her why it was a bad idea to get startled. At least it hadn't brought on another bout of chest pain - though whether it was because her medicine had kicked in or because Elene was right next to her, Airi couldn't be sure. She paused for a moment, gaze thoughtful - and then offered Elene an apologetic smile, moving to pull her sleeve back down.
"The long and short of it is yes." she didn't want to bore Elene with the details. "Most days I do pretty well, all things considered - today's a bad day, that's all."
Airi didn't mind talking about it - but knew pretty well that other people didn't know what to say or how to comment. She didn't want Elene to feel awkward, so with a polite smile, Airi switched topics. "Are you new here? I don't think I've seen you around lately."

Ugh, there hadn't even been any point in coming to school today. Ryan knew that when he crawled out of bed this morning, yet he still decided to get himself to school. It'd been going... okay. Right up until the end of PE. He wasn't even doing anything, he never did anything. All he did was freaking stand up because they were done, and he and his friends had plans to go wander off-campus for lunch.
As soon as he'd jumped to his feet, gripping onto Finn's hand, he'd felt it. Luckily, he knew enough in advance this time to actually say he was going to faint, so... at least he hadn't smacked his head like last time? Whoever caught him was a saint.
He woke up with like, probably every single nurse in Japan surrounding him, completely freaking out. It was so stupid. They hauled him off to the offices, even after he insisted he was fine. The worst part was seeing everyone look so scared.
Therefore, Ryan was kind of grumpy when he was wheeled (he was going to mcfreakin' lose it if this kept happening) into the nurse's office. He crossed his arms. He was hungry, they wouldn't even let him walk, and there were other people in here. Awesome. At least he knew one of them. She'd understand.
He was still crabby over the whole ordeal, so he just threw a helpless look towards Airi and the new girl sitting with her. The nurses were still fretting, and although he couldn't understand what they were saying 100%, they were going on about how fast his pulse still was. Did they think he was going to die just sitting in a stupid wheelchair? He felt fine!

Whatever Elene had wanted to say stuck in her throat. Surely the other girl had heard every possible word of sympathy that could possibly be offered. Saying "I'm sorry" didn't seem right. Elene hadn't waved a wand and made that poor girl ill. "I, ah..." She smiled shyly. "Hope your day gets better." That wasn't intrusive, surely.
"I am new," Elene said, shifting so she could lay down again. "I transferred here from a school in the United States--but I'm Japanese," she added, remembering how some of the students from overseas were treated here. "My parents just wanted me to go there because it was one of the best music schools in the world. But--"
The arrival of every nurse the school had on staff interrupted her, and for that she was thankful. She hadn't really wanted to explain herself. Elene shifted back to a sitting position, curious about what had caused all the ruckus. A blonde boy (awfully small and slight for a boy, wasn't he? Or was that a girl?) in a wheelchair looked over in their direction in the same helpless way a puppy in the shelter might have.
Her eyes darted toward the girl with dark hair she'd just been talking to. Was everyone at this school hopelessly ill?

She had a feeling she'd made the other girl uncomfortable. Airi nodded at Elene's comment, giving the other girl a smile of thanks, and listened as the other girl spoke. Something about the way the music school was brought up was strange - most people went to schools like that because they wanted to, but the way it had been phrased...
Airi didn't have a chance to comment on it, as the doors practically flew open and the staff rushed in, wheeling in a familiar face. Ah, she'd just been thinking about Ryan too - now she felt bad for assuming that Ryan was doing okay today. She gave Ryan a sheepish look in response, but the nurses crowding all over them made it hard for her to respond otherwise. The chatter about their heartbeat made Airi's brows crease in concern - and pity, she remembered that from her own relapse.
"Ah, maybe it would be better if Ryan-san had room to breathe? Crowding won't help much, you might overwhelm Ryan-san..." Airi suggested, just loud enough for the nurses to hear. Looking back over at Elene, the girl smiled in apology. "The nurses worry a little too much about us sometimes."
Oh!
"Ah, how rude of me, I didn't even introduce myself! I'm Wakahisa Airi, it's a pleasure to meet you."

This was so embarrassing. Ryan hated it when the nurses fretted over him, asking if he felt okay (he did) if he was in any pain (he wasn't) or if he needed anything (to be left alone).
Airi was some kind of saint, he was sure. At her words, the nurses dissipated, but only after making a giant show of helping him onto a bed. His face burned. Really, was all this necessary? After the fifth 'I'm fine' shouldn't they have just left him alone? God. At least he had people to talk to this time.
Okay, he didn't know one of them. That wasn't too big of a deal. Ryan figured he'd be stuck here for a while, so he laid down on the bed on his side, propping himself up on his arm.
Gosh, it was rude to not introduce himself, right?
"Oh, um... I'm Ryan Yang. It's nice to meet you." He smiled at Elene.

Elene wanted to like the girl with dark hair already. Her sweetness seemed genuine, and it did take nerve Elene desperately wished she had to tell the nurses to back off--and what's more, they listened. Elene felt like no one ever listened to her, let alone teachers or staff. "Ah, it's nice to meet you!" She smiled more widely now, enough to crinkle the corners of her eyes. "I'm--"
And that delicate person in the wheelchair interrupted her. Elene was sure they hadn't meant to. She was so soft-spoken sometimes that it felt like everyone talked over her. Why would the new person be different. "Ah. Yang." He was smiling, so she smiled, too. "I'm Elene Saijo. It's a pleasure to meet you both."

Airi wrestled with the urge to ask if Ryan was okay, but considering how grumpy they had looked when they'd been wheeled in, and how humiliated they had looked when the nurses had put them on the bed, Airi figured it probably wasn't a good topic. Hm. She couldn't exactly let the conversation fall into silence - that'd just be awkward for everyone involved.
"Saijo-san is a new student here." she said to Ryan, just before her gaze flicked back to Elene, Airi's demeanor gentle. "How do you like it here so far, Saijo-san?"
That seemed like a safe topic, if anything.

As soon as he spoke over Elene, Ryan's cheeks burned. He ducked his head, guilt washing over him. Well, he was going to obsess over this for the next week and a half. Awesome.
He settled down so he wasn't propped up. Even that was tiring at this point. He made sure to not speak when Elene was this time!
"Have you gotten lost yet? I still lose my way constantly."

Elene tensed almost imperceptibly. She never did like feeling on the spot. Ryan and Airi probably didn't mean any harm. It was just friendly conversation. Should have been friendly conversation, anyway. Her smile was polite and automatic. "I like it very much. It's a little strange, compared to schools I've been to before. But the change is nice." She giggled where she was supposed to, bringing a hand over her mouth.
"I've gotten lost a few times, Yang-san. There's this one hallway where the music rooms are. I keep hoping to find a practice room and I wandered into some kind of club, instead." No need to mention that she bolted as soon as everyone looked at her. "The grounds are confusing, too. Do you get lost on the grounds often?"

The nurses seemed to filter out slowly, though there were at least two or three still keeping an eye on she and Ryan from afar - Airi shifted a little uncomfortably, feeling them burning holes into the back of her head.
How embarrassing!
Airi paused for a moment, getting the feeling maybe it would have been a better idea to stay quiet. It was too late to apologize, she just had to hope Elene didn't hold it against her. "I've been here regularly since middle school but I still get lost sometimes! The buildings all look the same from afar, it's awful..." she sighed, shaking her head.
"Still, it's nice to explore - you discover so many nice things by accident! I found this lovely gazebo the other day, it looks like the perfect place for tea."
