The faculty office was empty when a soft knock was heard on the door. After a moment, it slowly opened and a pair of soft green eyes peered in.
"He's not here yet..." The door was pushed all the way open to reveal a relatively small girl with a long, dirty- blonde ponytail. In her arms she carried a set of notebooks full of notes from her classes, on the top her latest graded math assignment, a solid 98 written across the top. Kai looked around for a moment before sinking down into one of the chairs.
When her teacher had asked her to meet with him after class, Kai had of course agreed without hesitation. Maybe he wanted to give her advice about the course, or maybe he wanted to help her with the tricky problem she had encountered. (The only thing that had stood between her and a 100). Immediately she had contacted her sister, who always walked home with her, and after her final class had set off for the faculty lounge.
Kai looked up when she heard the door open, smiling in greet for her teacher, but... "Onee- chan?"
In the doorway stood a much taller girl with red hair and eyes the same color as Kais, though hers were much harder. Kagami sighed and walked into the room and sat beside her sister.
"I'm not headed home and letting you walk alone." Kagami crossed her arms over her chest, glancing over at the younger girl. "Besides... I dont think I can handle Dad and Kazue on my own."
Kai giggled at her sisters words. "Oh, come on! Id be fine, and... Well, Kazue isnt that bad!"
While this exchange might have seemed normal to others, to anyone who knew the Ohime sisters, it must have seemed incredibly odd; Kagami, the hostile, quiet girl who got alone with noone, was talking. Having a conversation!
"Yes she is." She rolled her eyes. "She and all those snobs over at her school."
kai scrunched her nose. "Yeah, some of those kids are really mean, I heard. I would be afraid to go there... What if-"
"No one would mess with you." Kagami interupted, reaching over and ruffling her sisters hair. "Id break their jaw before they could."
Kai playfully batted the hand away. "Onee- chan, thats mean!" After a second she giggled, though, and then the unimaginable happened; Kagami smiled, shaking her head and leaning back in her chair.
look at the watch on her wrist, the older girl sighed. "When if your teacher supposed to be here?"
"Be patient, he has classes that probably just finished up." kai responded, glancing at the watch too. She reached over and snaked her arm through her sisters. "Besides, not like you have anywhere else to be."

Hana walked from his last class for the day towards the faculty office with a spring in his step. He had convinced Kai, one of his best math students, to meet him there after school today with (perhaps not-so-surprising) ease, and he wanted to talk to her about an exciting prospect for future lectures. With his trusty clipboard in hand and a stack of reference material for Kai on top, he pushed open the door to the faculty office. The sight that greeted him upon doing so, however, shocked him into utter stillness. There was Kai sitting in a chair, and arm-in-arm with her was her sister Kagami. The hostile loner who never gave him or anyone the time of day. And she was...smiling? Hana would've figured her behavior might be different around her family, but from what he had seen of her, this was a little...too different. He didn't immediately know what to make of it, or if he was interrupting anything. When he finally snapped out of his trance, he hastily added a mental note to ask Kai about it...if he actually got a chance to speak with her today.
"Um...I see you've brought company...Kai-chan," he began hesitantly upon noticing his presence had her attention. He felt a little awkward addressing her by her first name, but it seemed a necessary evil to him with both sisters present. He walked toward his desk. "Are you...free to talk?"

The two sisters looked up simultaneously as they heard a voice behind them, but their reactions were completely different; the smile that had graced Kagamis face slipped away as though it had never existed, replaced by narrowed eyes and a scowl.
Kai, on the other hand, smiled even more. She stood up and gave a slight bow to Hana, who was probably her favorite teacher. "Uta- Sensei!" She said, clasping her hands together.
"I was just leaving." Kagami snapped at his observation. She turned to Kai and nodded at her. "I'll meet you outside the school when youre done." and with that, she exited the room, passing the teacher without even acknowledging him. She didnt nod, didnt even look at him as she wrenched the door open and slipped out.
Kai rubbed the back of her neck. "Sorry about her, Sensei. She doesnt mean to be like that, she just doesnt do... people... very well." She gave a light- hearted laugh, smiling brightly as she always did.
"Of course I'm free!" she sat down again, folding her hands in her lap. "Theres no cheerleading or gymnastics team practice today so I'm free!"
After a moment, she frowned the slightest bit."So... What did you want to talk to me about, Sensei? Is it about the last test? The one question really stumped me." but her smile returned rather quickly; she seemingly couldnt go without smiling for too long.

The magic disappeared just as suddenly as it had arrived; Hana could almost hear the pop of a teleportation spell as the unfamiliar Kagami in front of him was instantaneously swapped out for the sour one he knew. As she briskly walked past him for the door, a more or less automatic "Ohime-san..." fell from his mouth, which she offered no sign of even having heard. "...Yeah, she hates me," he muttered as she exited, neither knowing nor thinking it particularly mattered if she heard it. Kai apologized for her sister at that, sounding somewhat pained. She just doesn't do people very well. That got a slight chuckle out of Hana. She's no younger than any other student in her class, but she's still so innocent. At any rate, Hana had seen enough to have figured as much about Kagami, but it was still a bad habit of his to take these sorts of things personally. He was, after all, quite used to giving everyone around him plenty of reasons to hate him.
But Hana paid no mind to that. More interesting to him was the swerve in Kagami's attitude itself. If he could get that kind of attitude from her more often, he'd almost certainly be able to help work her through his class like he wanted. And whatever had brought about the change, it clearly had something to do with her sister. Her sister whom he was currently in the process of arranging to spend more time working together with. He didn't know how all the variables fit together yet, but just like any problem, he knew that if he kept calm and worked through it one step at a time, a solution to the equation would inevitably present itself.
Hana sat down next to Kai and listened as she started off the conversation. "Oh. Well, it's not what I had in mind to talk about, but if you want to ask about the last test, we can start with that." He waited for her to show him the problem in question. The question that was the problem. Stop it. "Ah, this one. I remember. Basically a how-much-algebra-can-you-apply-at-once question. It was tough, but you almost got it. There's only one step you forgot." He drew his finger across the page and stopped at a term. "Right here. To separate these terms, you just have to remember that when exponents are added together, it's the same as multiplying the bases and..." He walked her through the difficult portion of the problem and let her work through it again. "See? You're a smart girl, Ohime-chan. I'm very proud of how well you're doing in my class. And do you want to know what I think one of the reasons is?" He paused to let her think about the question. "You probably know by now that I like to use analogies to make mathematical concepts easier to understand after I introduce them, but you always seem to understand them even before I do. You don't question their real-world practicality; to you, they're instantly relatable. It's-..." He stopped himself from saying "It's what sets you apart" like it was a good thing. All that Western pony culture was starting to rub off on him. "...It's a special talent of yours, Ohime-chan. And I think you can use that along your mood making skills to substantially help out other students in your class when we do group learning activities, or even in general. Like if I don't have the time to give extra help to everyone, they'd know they can come to you instead. That's why I'd like to spend extra time with you now, to prepare you for taking on that responsibility." He flashed her the most reassuring smile he could manage. "But I'm only making an offer. In the end, of course, it's entirely your decision. What do you say?"

Kai smiled excitedly as her teacher sat beside her, eagerly pulling the latest test in front of them. "See, this one here." She pointed to the problem and she watched as Hana began to walk her through it. She tapped her chin as he spoke, occasionally nodding in response. Kais naturally excitable personality, however, prevented her from simply listening to long.
"So, if I had done ths instead..." She picked up a pencil and began writing numbers next to the incorrect problem, letting the problem work itself out on its own. She smiled; it was certainly a lot easier then she had thought it was, and having her teacher work through it with her made it more fun!
Kai giggled a little when Hana commented on her being a smart girl, and how proud he was. "Thank you, Sensei" she beamed happily. "I've always really liked math. I do a lot better in it then almost anything else. Especially English." She screwed her face up a bit at te mention of the language; her sister, kazue, was almost fluent in the language, but she just couldnt get a hold of it.
"But you're a really goof teacher to, Uta- Sensei" She said, smiling as she always did.
Hr eyes widened bit by bit as he explained the actual reason behind his asking her here. He... wanted her help? "Hang on a sec. You mean, you want me to help the rest of the class? So I get to help teach stuff and hang out with the other students and make new friends??"
Her face broke out in the biggest smile yet. "Yes! A hundred times yes! It sounds like so much fun!"

Hana gave only a modest smile at Kai's favorable answer, but internally he was cheering up a storm. He didn't think Kai would have turned him down, but it was important to him that he stressed that the decision was hers to make. He knew full well the value of making your own decisions and choosing your own paths through life, having been denied that ability for so long...having denied himself that ability, rather. But Kai was choosing her own path, and it was a path he could get behind. The girl loved to learn, and he was very much looking forward to working closely with her.
"Well then...that's settled. Thank you, Ohime-chan," he said happily. "That only leaves the issue of time management. We'll have to figure out a convenient way to fit spending an extra half hour or so together a few times a week. Hmmm..." Hana had a good idea of where just such a convenience might already lie. He decided to ease into the topic by asking Kai for more information. "Ohime-chan, I understand you're a member of the hostess club. Do you think you could tell me a little more about that?"

The prospect was exciting; Kai loved being able to interact with and make friends with other people. With this opportunity, she would be able to not only do that but help them in something that she loved. "Uta- Sensei, theres nothing to thank me for Im super excited to be able to help out and Im glad you think I can do it!" her smile was blinding, the excitement impossible to contain. When her teacher asked her about getting together for extra time, she tapped her chin thoughtfully. "Well... I have gymnastics every wednesday right after school, Cheerleading is every Monday and Thursday at three till four, and then I have the sewing club once a month, usually the first Saturday of the month. So... Well, every other day Im at the Host Club, and im there after my practices too.."
Then Hana asked her about said club, and she broke out in a smile. "Oh Sensei, Its so much fun! A bunch of girls and the Hosts get together and we get to hang out with other students! We get to entertain them and have fun and make friends and its just great!" Kais hands formed into fists which she held to her chest in excitement. "The best part is I have a bunch of friends in there. Yuri- chan and Suzu- san, Shiro- chan, Kage- chan, and my Onee-chan is there too!"

Hana had thought he had a simple enough plan; attending the hostess club himself as a guest of Kai's should've been a painfully convenient excuse to spend extra time working with her. But his thoughts stopped dead at this new information. He cocked an eyebrow and tilted his head. Kagami was also a member of the hostess club? He hadn't been aware of this; he'd have to double-check the roster.
Hana knew about the hostess club. He knew it was basically the concept of a common hostess bar stripped of its 'adult' (not necessarily in the lewd sense of the term) elements and down to a more family-friendly format that could be presented and enjoyed by high school students. And from Kai's description of the club, she seemed to have no less pleasant an idea of it. It was easy to picture a friendly, outgoing girl like Kai enjoying such an activity, but he couldn't even begin to guess at a reason why her complete opposite of a sister would choose to be a hostess. Until just a few minutes ago, he wouldn't have been able to imagine Kagami acting like a hostess towards anyone, and "anyone that's not Kai" wasn't a very big step up. Still, if it was true...it could only have something to do with her sister, considering Kai's presence was just about the only thing Hana was aware of that could evoke such a shift in behavior from her. Hana studied Kai's face in silence, as if scrutinizing her features would help him solve the puzzle faster. There had to be a way he could get all the pieces to fit together. He needed more information; he had to pursue this line of questioning.
"Your sister is in the hostess club, Ohime-chan?" he asked, leaning forward. "I don't think I would've expected that. What does she do there, do you know? Does she entertain anyone? I mean...she doesn't exactly strike me as the type to be predisposed to such an activity, you know?" He sat back and folded his hands on one knee, awaiting Kai's response. If he could just find out the relationship between Kai, Kagami, and the hostess club, he could figure out how best to use it to everyone's mutual benefit. Then he'd make his move.

Kai tilted her head to the side a bit as Hana asked about her Onee- chan being in the Hostess Club with her. She could say she didnt understand his confusion; The painful truth was the teacher was very right. Kagami wasnt the kind of person who one would think of enjoying entertaining others.
"Actually, Sensei," She said with a smile. "Onee- chan has clients, too! Though she doesnt really do anything different then what she normally does; Tamak- Senpai says that there will always be people drawn to the 'dark type'" She accented her words by making quotation marks with her fingers.
She smiled, nodding at the last sentence the teach asked. "Its a funny story, actually!" She giggled lightly.
"When they first made the Hostess club, Tamaki- Senpai and Kyouya- Senpai came and asked ME to join the Club. But... When Onee- chan found out..."
She shrugged. "Onee- chan didnt like the idea of me being in a Club entertaining boys, with a bunch of other... um..." She blushed a little. "well... the Hosts, though... she didnt call them that.
"She told the boys that she didnt want me in the group and then Kage- chan suggested she join with me. She didnt like that idea either, but... I really wanted to join the club because it sounded like fun, and it has been!"
She smiled widely. "So you see, she just wanted to protect me. Onee- chan has always been there for me, you know? Shes always there for me!"

There will always be people drawn to the "dark type"... Hana rested his chin in a hand and frowned, despite the amused snort he gave at Kai's cute, little finger quotes. He was trying to imagine the appeal of spending time with someone who was actively trying to make it clear that she'd rather not hang out with you; he couldn't do it. To him, at least, it seemed to go against the whole point of attending a hostess club - to enjoy the feeling of having someone's undivided attention for a while. He crossed his arms and clutched them as an even darker thought crossed his mind in response. Anyone who did enjoy her entertainment would most likely be reveling in the feeling of commanding her attention against her will...no one who would enjoy such a thing could possibly be described as "savory". He was starting to become even more concerned for Kagami. Noticing how grim he must have looked to poor Kai though, he straightened himself up and motioned for her to continue.
The hosts, though...she didn't call them that... A dark grin crept across Hana's face as he imagined the more colorful choice words Kagami could have substituted for "hosts". As he listened, it became abundantly clear to him just how much Kagami was willing to subject herself to for her sister's sake. And with that thought, everything came together in his mind. Kai finished talking, and Hana sat in silence for a few moments as he formulated his plan and prepared to put it into words for her. Having to capitalize on Kagami's protectiveness of her sister didn't sit particularly well with him, but at this point he saw no other realistic options for getting her to start opening up to him. Sometimes, you just had to play the rest of the field.
He took a deep breath and looked Kai straight in the eyes. "Well, Ohime-chan, it makes me happy to see that you have such a good relationship with your sister. I can tell you're both very important to each other, and that she goes through a lot for you. And you know what? I think there's another way you can help her now too." He punctuated his statement by reaching out to briefly brush a finger across her hand in one swift motion. "Here's what I propose: I'd like to be a client of yours in the Hostess Club every now and then. That would give us the extra time we need to work together like I mentioned earlier. But...I'm sure your sister would be worried for you upon hearing that you have a new client. She'd probably want to make sure she's there with you, don't you think?" He turned his head away slightly and glanced back at her with a wry smile. "We don't have to tell anyone I'll be your new client. That way we can surprise her, I'll help you both out with my class, and everyone will be better off! What do you say?"
