This flashback thread takes place specifically a year earlier, soon after when Scarlett begins at Ouran Middle School. Both girls are in 2-A at this point <3
Timestamp: 2nd May, 3:30pm
Izaya held her bag to her chest looking to the two girls that come up to her. They wanted to talk to her? Why would these more popular girls want to talk to her at all? She didn't understand it at all and it bothered her. Something about it made her unnerved about it.
"Why would you need to talk to me?" She asked softly. Her brown eyes shifted between the two girls, who both rolled their eyes as they glanced to each other.
"Well, you're good with computers, right?" The taller of the two asked. "Shizuka and I were wondering if you could help with our grades. You get it?"
"Ryoko, keep your voice down." Shizuka, one of the more prettier girls lightly slapped her friend's hand. "We can't just let our grades fall or we'll get in trouble with our parents."
Izaya blinked with wide eyes. "I can't do that! That's illegal and if I get found out I'd be kicked out!" She said squeaking out of nervousness and worry. "I-I'm sorry, I have to go." She said moving to walk passed them before she felt herself pulled back by Ryoko.

"Hey hey, we didn't say you could go." Ryoko scowled at Izaya, pulling her back and standing between her and the door, "I can see being civil isn't going to work with you, so let's just cut to the chase." She leaned down, smirking at her, "You and your cousin are pretty good friends right?" She smiled slightly, "Unless you think of your cousin... as more than a cousin, oh my."
"Oh dear, that's not good." Shizuka shook her head, "But believable, he does visit you an awful lot."
"And if you don't do what we tell you." Ryoko leaned over, smiling at Izaya, "Then that's exactly what everyone's going to think."
At the front of the room a group of girls were assembled, all clutching various bags and purses. There was a loud peal of laughter from them at something the red haired girl had said.
Scarlett hadn't long since started at Ouran but she'd quickly made a large group of friends and was starting to get pretty popular among the boys. She even had a boyfriend, Sho. Yes, life was good. Very good. But something was boring. It wasn't quite good enough. Looking up at the loud commotion between the three girls at the back of the classroom she blinked, sizing up the two taller girls and scrutinizing the tallest one.
She didn't know her. She didn't know what they were talking about either. But the fact that the tallest one seemed to be dragging the small one away from the door and holding her back... didn't look good. She hummed quietly, trying to turn back to the conversation but casting an eye back to the group every so often.
Izaya gasped and gave an audible squeak as she was pulled back. She looked up to Ryoko, the sheer look of disbelief and fear on her face and in her eyes. "S-Sei's my cousin! I can't like him m-more than that!" She said softly, looking to Shizuka and frowned. "Please, I don't want to leave the school. I-I'll help with your homework i-instead." She offered as her grip tightened around her bag and looked down.
Why do I have to get myself into these messes!?
Ryoko raised a brow at Izaya's words and reactions, keeping a careful hold on the smaller girl's arm so she couldn't leave the room just yet. "Hmmm," She mused thoughtfully, trying to Izaya hope. "I don't know...what do you think, Shizuka?"
Shizuka crossed her arms and looked thoughtful as well. "With how the semester is almost done, I don't think that will work, Izaya. It seems you really do like your cousin, a little more than you should." She said feigning a look of pity for Izaya.
"I-I don't!" Izaya said feeling her eyes watering and closed them. She couldn't let herself cry here...not in front of them and not in front of the whole class.

Scarlett remained quiet for a minute, eyes firmly glued to the girls by now. There was another laugh from her group but she'd already moved, hooking her arm through her bag and pushing past a group of boys to get to Ryoko, Shizuka, and Izaya. She slapped Ryoko's wrist lightly, pushing her hand away from Izaya and standing next to her.
"Do we have a problem?" She frowned, looking up at Ryoko and folding her arms. "Are you making somebody else's life difficult?"
"You're quite confident for someone who's just started." Ryoko scowled at Scarlett and she smirked.
"Because I can take you." She replied smoothly, pulling her phone out and looking at it quickly, "Ryoko Inoue. Bedwetter. Shizuka Nishimura. How's that crush on Sho working out?" She tilted her head, tapping her chin while still smiling lightly, "Oh no wait... He doesn't know, but he could!" She started a text quickly, "We could just tell him right now! How about that?"
Izaya was not expecting it when one of the newer girls, Scarlett had stepped up and gotten Ryoko off of her. She looked to the other girl and took a step back from them. She didn't say anything but she kept her head lowered, still trying keeping the tears at bay. Her breathing had picked up a bit, hoping that she could calm down.
Ryoko's brows furrowed when she felt her wrist slapped and saw Scarlett step up next to Izaya. "W-What!?" She said when she heard Scarlett say bedwetter, her face going red. "Why you little!?"
Shizuka was not amused when she saw Scarlett interfere. "Look, Scarlett, there's not much that you can say that'll..." But she was cut off when Scarlett said that she had a crush on Sho. "S-Stop! Don't tell him!"
Izaya was amazed to say the least. Scarlett was standing up for her against them! Izaya blinked though when she noticed Ryoko seemed to move closer to Scarlett and stepped up as she tripped Ryoko. She didn't want to hurt her too much but at least make her back off from Scarlett.

"Oh I'm sure there's a lot I could say." Scarlett smiled, holding her phone in one hand and twirling a strand of hair around the finger of her other hand, "I haven't spent this last month doing nothing you know."
As Ryoko tripped past her she backed off quickly. Several other students looked up and at the group of girls. Scarlett stared at Ryoko, kneeling on the floor and rubbing her head from tripping before she pulled her phone close to herself and pointed at Ryoko.
"She just attacked me! You saw that right?! She just went for me!"
There were murmurs around the class. "I think I did..." "She did something..." "It's something Ryoko would do..." "She went straight for Scarlett-Chan! How terrible!"
The mumbles continued and eventually a lot of people were convinced Ryoko had gone straight for Scarlett and missed.
Scarlett looked up at Shizuka and smiled lightly. "Take your friend and go. If I see you bothering someone again, I won't be so nice."
Shizuka was not happy. She was about to say something before Izaya tripped Ryoko. "Hey, what do you think you're doing!?" She said pointing a finger at Izaya.
Ryoko blinked as she started to her the murmurs after Scarlett spoke, paling a bit at the accusations...even if they were true. She felt herself picked up by Shizuka, looking to her friend before silently leaving the room.
Izaya cringed a bit when she heard and saw that Shizuka was looking at her, having seen what she did. When they left though, she sighed with relief and looked to Scarlett a little nervously. "Umm...thank you, Scarlett....I-I'll be going now though." She told her classmate, still feeling like she wanted to cry.

Once the two girls were out of the room, Scarlett sighed out quickly, patting her cheeks before looking down at Izaya who seemed to want to leave again.
"Wait wait." She held Izaya's elbow gently, guiding her to her seat at the back of the room, urging her to sit down. She sat down in another seat near her and began to dig around through her bag, "You need to remember; after confrontations, don't leave right away, you have a right to be here so you should hang around for a while to reinforce that. Also it makes you look guilty if you leave so try and stick around."
Finding something in the bottom of her bag, she pulled out a packet of tissues and took one out, handing it over to Izaya, "Also remember, you need to be confident, and grow a thicker skin. We have five more years of school before university so you need to be tough." She reached over and patted Izaya's hand lightly, "And then there's my favourite; Fake it until you make it." She leaned back in her seat, putting her bag on her desk and watching Izaya quietly.
"Are you going home today? I'll walk to your car with you. See if those girls try anything else."
Izaya was surprised when Scarlett gently grabbed her elbow. She looked up to the girl and gave a simple nod, following the other girl to the desks and sat down. "O-Oh...I...I know that I can stay here. I really was trying to leave when they stopped me." She said softly. When Scarlett mentioned that she might look guilty though after leaving right away, that made her frown, having never realized it. "I...I didn't know that made a person look guilty...."
She looked down then, her bag in her lap and sighed heavily. She could still feel those tears sitting in her eyes but soon enough, she saw out of the corner of her eye that Scarlett was holding out a single tissue. Her head rose and after a minute of thought, took the tissue. "Five more years...I hope I can get more confident." She said but definitely understood why Scarlett said what she did. She lightly dapped her eyes with the tissue, feeling a little better though something her classmate said confused her. "Fake it?"
"Ah, I don't go to a car, Scarlett." Izaya said giving a small smile. "I live here in the dormitories. My parents thought it'd be better interaction with any friends that I make."

"After a confrontation it certainly makes you look guilty, however it also gives the impression you don't like confrontation." Scarlett lowered her voice, leaning down to pat Izaya's hand, "And even if you don't like confrontations... which I'm guessing you don't... pretend they don't faze you."
Izaya was so small and quiet... She reminded Scarlett of Ethan. That was probably why she'd stepped in. She didn't like to see smaller and more nervous kids being taken advantage of.
"That's right. Fake it." Scarlett nodded, "Pretend like you're the most confident person on the planet, fake being strong, and if you fake it for long enough people are gonna believe it, and then eventually you'll believe it yourself, so then you'll have made it." She looked at her knees for a minute before looking up again, "Alternatively, you come and find me. I'll deal with it."
At Izaya's small smile, Scarlett blinked and looked away, cheeks slightly pink. She was kind of cute...
"Well then... I'll walk you to your room." She stood up, slinging her bag over her arm and tugging at her cardigan, "Unless you'd rather walk alone?"
Izaya listened to Scarlett, nodding lightly and overall looking better now. "I see...I don't know how well, I'd do...but I think I can give it a chance." She said giving another small smile to the other classmate. Izaya was rather surprised when Scarlett told her to find her if acting confident didn't help her out with the girls.
Though Izaya noticed that Scarlett looked away from her for a minute and seemed a little pink. "Are you alright, Scarlett? Did I say something wrong?" She asked her voice still low but not pausing now in between words like she had been before. "Ummm," She said before opening her own bag and looked through it as she pulled out a small travel case of medicine. "I tend to get headaches often, I don't know if you're feeling ill but this can help a bit." She said holding it out to the girl.
"Oh...umm, I've never really walked with anyone back to my room..." She thought about and blushed lightly. Was it really okay to take her up on the offer? Izaya would like to know how it feels. "I...I'd like that actually, Scarlett. But what about your friends that you were talking to first?"

At the medicine being presented to her, she blinked, taking them gingerly, "Oh it's fine, It's just warm today." She undid the buttons of her cardigan and shrugged it off, folding it over one arm as she pulled her water bottle out and took the tablets then handed them back to Izaya, "Thanks..."
"Oh, them?" Scarlett looked up, picking up her bag then she raised a hand and waved, "I'll see you guys tomorrow, okay? Text me tonight!" She was met with a chorus of affirmations and thumbs ups. Waving slightly, she looked down at Izaya, "Well you know the way, so let's go."
She headed out of the classroom and waited for Izaya to choose their route. "So, tell me about yourself. How long have you been here?"
Izaya blinked and nodded. It did feel a little warm today. She took the bottle back placing back in her bag. "You're welcome, Scarlett."
When Scarlett called out to her group of friends, she could help the look of sheer surprise and awe on her face. "Huh?" She asked when it was mention that she knew the way to her room. "Oh! Yes!"
Izaya quickly got up, putting her bag over her shoulder and followed Scarlett out into the halls. "Me? Well...I've been here since the start of middle school. I was kind of a shut in back home and my parents wanted me to be around more people I could be friends with."

"Oh. Shame." Scarlett followed Izaya quietly, pulling her phone out and texting someone before stuffing it back in her bag, "Well you've been here longer than I have. That's something at least." She shrugged slightly, tucking her hair behind her ear and continuing to walk.
Her eyes slid down to look at Izaya from the corner of her eye, how could one girl be so small?! Scarlett almost felt sorry for her, it was unlikely she'd grow much more, if at all! She'd have to get a lot tougher to make up for it.
When they got to the grounds, Scarlett stretched and rolled her neck in the weak afternoon sun, then continuing to follow Izaya to the dorm buildings.
"How's that working out for you? Made any friends yet?"
Izaya gave a small pout when Scarlett asked how things were going. "Well...truthfully not that well. I've met a few people that I speak to though it's through clubs and school work. None that I would really call my friend though." She adjusted her bag a bit as she reached up and fixed the clip that held her bangs back on the right side of her face.
"Most of the friends that I have are back at home and don't come here....though we've been losing contact and general interests too now." She added softly but seemed to sound as if she was just talking normally about things. "I know it happens and I'll make new friends but I tend to focus on my video games and programming more than meeting new people."
