Personal Information:
Name: Gwendolyn Sage Howell
Nickname(s): Gwen, Sunflower
Birthdate: October 16
Age: 20
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 135 lbs
Eye Color: Grey
Hair Color: Blonde
Nationality: American
Personality: Gwendolyn isn’t what you’d call outgoing. She’s always been the kind to lay low in a social situation, never making the first move, never aiming to be the center of attention. She’s deeply, painfully shy, see, and being the center of attention makes her super, super uncomfortable. It doesn’t help that she’s incredibly insecure. When she looks at herself in a mirror she sees her flaws exaggerated. She can make a list of every single one of her failings as a human being but cannot think of a single good thing to say about herself. She can come off as being a little petty and jealous, sometimes, because she measures herself against other people and always finds herself wanting. Mostly she’s small and scared of a lot of things (strange men especially!) and her voice has a nasty habit of failing to work when she’s flustered. She’s also far better at articulating herself in writing than she is in person, especially when she’s nervous/flustered/scared to death.
She does her best to be good, or to try to be good, anyway. She’s incredibly thoughtful and helpful and kind. If you ever find yourself in need of help, Gwendolyn would be the first to volunteer. If your birthday was coming up and she noticed that you needed new shoes, she’d buy you new shoes. If your birthday were coming up and she saw you eyeballing a set of fishing lures, she’d get you those fishing lures and she’d probably figure out a way to get a good deal on them, too, ‘cause that girl is thrifty as.
For the most part, Gwendolyn doesn’t do confrontation very well. Her response is to hide or ignore and to bottle everything up inside. Even when she inevitably explodes because one person can’t keep things bottled up forever, it’s understated and quiet, because she internalizes everything and turns her anger and resentment inward against herself. If something bad happens, it’s because of her and if something good happens, it’s in spite of her.
Gwendolyn has no backbone. She’s a doormat to the extreme. If you tell her to do something, she’ll do it, even if she doesn’t want to. This is because she wants very much to please all people at all times, even if it comes at her own expense. It’s very rare that she’ll go toe-to-toe with anyone and if she does she’s completely drained afterward. Until recently, she hasn’t been one to question things.
There is not a malicious bone in her body. She’s nigh incapable of vindictiveness, of guile, of manipulation. The thought would honestly never even occur. She can’t even lie, and if she tries the truth comes out immediately because even a little lie makes her feel unbearably guilty. When it matters, she can keep a secret, but if she has to lie about something to keep the secret she’ll have a really, really hard time.
Physical Appearance: lanky and leggy and basically like a bby!deer. also Mia Wasikowska also I will finish this as I have time
Fashion Sense: Gwen dresses fairly conservatively, for comfort and practicality more than style. She's very much a jeans and tees kind of girl. That's not to say she won't wear dresses, because she has several that she just loves, but she isn't willing to sacrifice her comfort for a trend.
Notable Hairstyle(s): Gwen has always kept her hair shorter than shoulder length. Lately, she's been rocking a pixie cut.
Personal History: Sofia Howell ruled the roost. She was deeply religious--the kind who homeschooled the kids and believed in things like courting and prayer closets. She'd already had her childrens' lives planned out for them from the beginning--Gabe was so handsome he'd obviously be an actor, Asher was clever, so he'd go to law school, and Gwen...well. Sofia never knew what to do about Gwen. Gwen had been an unplanned child, and, unfortunately for Sofia, her last. She caught a serious infection not long after Gwen was born that left her barren.
Perhaps that was why Sofia resented her so much. As far as Sofia was concerned, Gwen was just going to have to be a respectable woman, one who married young or only went to college to find a husband, even though Gwen was showing an aptitude for numbers and math even from a young age. She was much harder on Gwen than she ever was on the boys, and Gabe, ever the mama's boy, picked up on it and made it his mission in life to make Gwen's life more difficult. When he turned 18 and left for college, it was a relief.
Asher, on the other hand, became very protective of Gwen. He stayed close by her and didn't let the other kids in their homeschool group pick on her, and if she had trouble with her homework he'd do the best he could to help her. As they got older and Gwen's aptitude for math became more evident, she helped him with his homework.
She was fifteen when everything changed. Asher was in college and couldn't look after her like he had before, and she'd fallen in love, see, with a slightly older boy who she'd met around town, some wannabe punk who rode a motorcycle and cursed like a sailor. The trouble was, she was sort-of seeing another boy from church, and while she was very fond of him, she didn't love him quite the way she loved her little rebel.
Their romance lasted a year, until Gwen told her other boyfriend about it, and, predictably, things went south. Her boyfriend went straight to her mother. Sofia verbally attacked her and, after the argument was said and done, Gwen was thrown out with little more than the clothes on her back and her cell phone. She stayed at Asher's apartment at first, trying to keep a job she'd gotten at a greasy spoon. Waiting tables was difficult for her, given her shyness, but she didn't want to let Asher down.
The Rebel never talked to her after that. She saw him, once, at the library, and he ignored her.
When she was seventeen, her Aunt Connie swooped in to take care of Asher's tuition, and, having found Gwen living with him, offered to help Gwen out, too, provided she get a GED and be willing to move to Salt Lake City with her. Gwen was wary at first, but accepted her aunt's offer, and, in her aunt, found the mother she never had.
Her mother died the day she turned eighteen. Gwen feels bad for not feeling bad.
That same year, she was working in a bookstore and going to school when a man came to the counter needing help finding a particular book for his daughter. Although there was an age difference, they were attracted to one another and the man (who introduced himself as Alex) came by the bookstore every day, until he worked up the nerve to ask her out.
There were complications, though--Alex told her he was polyamorous on his first date, and currently married another man named Nathan. Alex had been married to a woman before, and for a while he and his wife had both had a relationship with his current partner. Gwen was more intrigued than put off. She and Alex have been together for two years now, and while it hasn't been easy (Nathan was terribly insecure for a long time), their relationship is solid. Now that Nathan is more secure, he and Gwen have begun dating each other, but it's very slow going.
Currently, Gwen is studying abroad at Ouran, thanks to her Aunt Connie's recommendation (she has friends in high places). She's alone right now, but she makes sure to Skype with her boys (and sorta-stepdaughters) as often as she can. Hopefully, one of them will be able to come out for a visit...
