"I know she does but don't let anyone hear!" She laughed again, "Some people just have layers." She smirked, watching him from the corner of her eye before looking forward again.
"What rubbish." She rolled her eyes, "You're not mean. Well. You're not mean to me." She waved a hand, trying to reach for words, "You're like... sweet." Stop talking Scarlett, "But yes, you're the toughest nerd I know." Seriously Scarlett, stop talking. "I guess that's why I like you!" She grinned brightly then looked forward, bringing a hand to shield her eyes, "Ah, it's just ahead! Come on!"

Spencer just laughed, deciding to finally let the subject go. Kage would probably know if they were talking smack about her and she'd absolutely murder Spencer. He wasn't too fond of that idea. He enjoyed his life, for the most part.
He did a doubletake, squinting suspiciously at Scarlett. "Me? Sweet? No way! You're delusional. I'm mean and heartless." Him! Sweet! He appreciated being called tough, though. Spencer almost fell over when Scarlett admitted she liked him (he already knew, why was that so weird?) but righted himself, keeping steady on his path towards the restaurant.
Now he just had to remember how to maneuver all the Japanese he'd have to use. God. "Get hyped for me sucking at Japanese."

At him declaring himself heartless, she squinted herself to mirror him, pursing her lips slightly as she did so, "Suuuuure." A heartless person who was in fact anything but. Kind and sweet. A marshmallow. A lovely marshmallow. "Whatever helps you sleep at night tough guy." She was kind of being sarcastic but not really. He was tough. Protective was probably a better word. It was nice.
When he spoke up again she smiled slightly, "I'm hyped. The banter will be real." She frowned to herself as she stepped inside the restaurant and looked around, "I used to speak normally before I met you." She was quiet for a minute before she smiled at him again, "Ask me if you want help."

Spencer scrunched his face up, mildly offended at Scarlett's offer. But not really. "No! No, I'm gonna do this. I've been here long enough that I ought to be able to conquer this, right?"
Definitely. He made his way up to the counter, his mouth suddenly going dry. "Um... I have a reservation, um, for... two people?" To help, he held up two fingers. "Reznik." God, his name sounded weird in Japanese. But he did it! It wasn't too terrible and the girl at the desk actually understood him - what an accomplishment!

She held her hands up at his protests, stepping back as he talked to the girl at the desk, listening casually behind him. When the girl headed off to check on the table she moved over to stand next to him, "I'll just bite my tongue, how about that?" She smiled, "He came, he conquered. By the way, you don't suck at Japanese, don't be hard on yourself."
When the girl came back she had two menus and showed them to their table next to the window. Scarlett smiled primly, moving over to sit in her chair and resting her bag between her feet. She was taken aback at how... nice the restaurant was. She'd known they were coming here and yet at the same time... maybe she'd been prepared for something else? It didn't matter. She was really happy.
"This place is really nice." She looked out the window for a moment, menu sitting open in front of her, "I feel kind of under dressed." She smoothed her skirt, patting her knees quietly. She was nervous. This was supposed to be a date... wasn't it?
The waitress came over to take their orders and when she left Scarlett tapped the table nervously, "Spencer... Just so I know where we stand... Is this a date?"

Spencer glanced around, his eyebrows pulling together slightly. "Yeah, me too." He wasn't especially fancy. Ever. God, this was weird. He flipped through the menu, only half-reading through the items. He just wanted whatever was least expensive. Lucky for him, it was some kind of pasta thing and he liked pasta. It probably wouldn't be terrible.
He was completely distracted by messing around with his napkin and attempting to fold it correctly on his lap when Scarlett dropped the question. Spencer looked at her, his eyes wide, holding the napkin a few inches above his legs.
"Sure is." was all he said. "Unless you don't want it to be, in which case I'll just wander on home and cry myself to sleep for the next three years, no pressure."

Suddenly she sat up straighter. She didn't know why she was suddenly more self conscious. She'd already been pretty sure it was a date but now hearing it directly from the source... Her heartbeat had sped up and she could feel the heat rising in her ears and cheeks.
'Calm down. It's just a date.'
She looked up and blinked, holding a hand up and opening her mouth to protest, "No!" She stopped, "I mean, No don't cry yourself to sleep, yes I want this to be a date!" She could feel her cheeks getting warm again and she looked away quickly, hiding behind her hair. She clenched her hands on her knees, pressing her lips together for a moment before looking up again.
"You know I like you. I'm really happy this is a date." She smiled, tucking her hair behind her ear, "Did you really think I'd just ditch you? I know I'm mean but really..." She smirked slightly.

Spencer took in Scarlett's reaction, propping his chin on his fist. His confident smile only grew to goofy grin proportions, refusing to rein itself in. He raised his eyebrows at her, nodding. "Yeah, super mean. Like, the meanest person I've ever met. Honestly, I don't know how you have friends."
One of the things he liked the most about Scarlett was how she didn't get all offended when he said things like that. Well, and she got it. Some people thought he was being serious and that was always awkward to explain.
"Really, though, I'm pretty happy too. Um. I'm really glad you agreed to go out with me. I thought you'd think I was weird or something because I'm like a senior citizen."

Scarlett raised her eyebrows and then laughed slightly, waving a hand, "I pay them, you know that, I paid you last week to take me out today." She smirked, leaning forward and looking up through her eyelashes at Spencer.
The waitress came back with their drinks and she leaned back from the table slightly, looking down at her lap and busying herself with setting her napkin over her lap. Once the waitress left again she reached for her drink (it was supposed to be apple and raspberry) and hesitantly pulled the straw to her mouth, drinking quietly.
When he spoke again, her gaze turned sad for just a moment but the look vanished soon enough. She reached over and hesitantly put her hand over his, then shook her head. "No. You're not weird." The edges of her eyes crinkled as she smiled, "You're special." The heat rose in her cheeks as she realized what she'd said and she leaned back, red faced, holding up her hand and speaking quickly, "Just saying, you're not a senior citizen or anything! So it's not weird! You're not that much older than me!" She pressed her lips together and looked away quickly.
She made herself seem more impressive than she actually was around classmates when it came to dating. She tried to believe it herself but now she felt simultaneously happy and embarrassed. This was pretty much her first proper date. But she wasn't going to tell anyone that!
Eventually she looked up again, "You're not weird. You're not bad or anything either... I've already said you're special, so there." She tapped her fingers on the table, "I'm not taking it back."

Spencer dragged his glass closer, sipping silently. His drink was evidently pomegranate. Well... he was okay with this. He stared at Scarlett, his eyes darting towards her hand over his. Silently, he pulled his hand back to properly hold hers and returned to looking at her.
"You're pretty neat, too, I guess." Spencer grinned. "But you know, now that you've called me special once you have to say it forever. As often as I want. And probably with a 'and super cool' thrown in there to because I'm cool."
He leaned back, glancing down at the table. At least Scarlett didn't think they were too far apart in age - he knew some people that would absolutely think it was weird. He probably knew a lot of people (and had some weird fans that seemed to hate him more than they liked him) that would think it was weird. Creepy. Ugh. He had to stop thinking about this.

"Well, I don't know about that." She shot back quickly, smiling slightly, "I think that might be too much, I couldn't possibly say that you're special and super cool." He always managed to make her feel slightly more easy in a situation. She was grateful. Her cheeks still felt very warm though.
She sipped from her drink again, choosing to look at a particularly interesting spot on the table. She was a little concerned about what people would think if they saw her out with Spencer. She liked him plenty and he made her laugh, he was smart, he was kind, but at the same time he was a high schooler. He was only two years older than her but still... She didn't say anything for a moment.
She didn't know what to say.
"You have to call me neat forever then. And you have to call me 'super cute' because I am!" She folded her arms, "Honestly, I think you can do better than just 'neat' but we'll work on it."

Spencer pretended to think about things for a while, pensively gazing out the window. It was now or never, right? Probably not never - he was sure he'd see Scarlett soon and things wouldn't be weird, but this was The Right Time and The Right Time didn't come around too often, he assumed.
"I mean, I could also call you my girlfriend and that'd probably cover all the bases here," he said casually, peeking at Scarlett to judge her reaction. "Is that good enough?" Oh god oh man oh god oh boy. He did The Thing. He was either about to be super hyped or super distressed (and very hungry because he would absolutely just flee).
Spencer hoped that he'd be hyped.

Scarlett's glass had been halfway to her lips when Spencer spoke again and she stopped, lips slightly parted, then put her drink down again, with a little more force than she'd intended. After a minute she blinked and pressed her lips together, looking down at her nails. She opened her mouth to reply then promptly closed it again.
How was he so casual about all this?! It made her feel concerned. He better be freaking out silently in his head!
She sat up straight, but managed to retain a somewhat casual air. She leaned an elbow onto the table, resting her chin on the back of her hand as a small smile played on her lips. "Yes. It is." Her smile widened and eventually she laughed slightly, looking down for a moment before looking up again, "I'd like that, a lot actually." She sat up straight again, left hand in her lap and her right hand held up against her chest, fingers curled towards her palm. She smiled so bright, her eyes crinkled at the corners, head slightly tilted to the side, "You should definitely call me your girlfriend!"

Spencer grinned at Scarlett, finally letting his tensed muscles relax some. Good. That had gone better than he thought!
"Okay, awesome, because I absolutely thought you'd say no!" His grin grew wider, his cheeks feeling warmer than they had before. "But now you have to call me your boyfriend. I feel bad for you... almost." After all, he was cool and cool people deserved cute girlfriends! He couldn't wait to update Ryan - who no doubt had already texted him asking for an update, he knew because he'd felt his phone vibrate earlier.
Ryan could wait! For now, he had an awesome dinner with his new girlfriend to enjoy.

Thought she'd say no? Her face fell for a minute... He'd really thought she'd say no? It seemed like her subtle hints had been wasted after all. It was a shame. He was so clueless. Oblivious Champion. That was it. Gold medal Oblivious champion.
She cracked a smile again, looking down at the table and shaking her head. "Oh yeah, poor me, how will I live with it?" She could almost see the sarcasm, "I think I'll live." She could feel her cheeks getting warmer by now. She couldn't even imagine what her friends would say... other than be awed at the fact that she was dating a high schooler. And rightly so.
She reached over to hold his hand again, cheeks still slightly pink as she propped up her chin in her other hand, "Did you really think I'd say no?"
